During term 2, Year 6 made robots using the BBC Microbit. The children used their DT, coding and teamwork skills to design, make and code their robots in small groups. We were very lucky to have some support from the Digital School House team at New College. Whilst at New College, the children learned all of the amazing things the Microbit could do which inspired them to create their unique designs. Our finished robots were completed to a high standard with lots of funky and interesting designs.
As part of our ‘Five a day’ topic, we have been reading the stories ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ and ‘Oliver’s Fruit Salad’. In our classes, we made our very own fruit salad using some of our favourite fruits. We each washed and cut up the fruit. We then poured in the juice and mixed up the fruit. We even got to try some and it was delicious!
This week in Year 2, we all had a day on building polar explorer rovers out of lego. To begin with, we learnt about the polar explorers and the Halley VI Research station in Antartica. We then learnt why they might use robots to help them with their research. Then, using the Lego WeDo kits, we followed instructions on how to make the polar explorer rovers. Then, using their sensor and programming them using coding, we tested to see how far away it had to be from an object before it detected it and stopped. The children loved making and investigating with the robots and had such a fun day doing so.
