Year 5

Term 3 summary

Our topic this term was ‘Is there anybody out there?’ and we investigated our Solar System as well as exploring the rainforests of our world.

In English this term, we have been looking at the story Cosmic by Frank Cottrell Boyce and we wrote our own narratives based on events from the book. Our non-fiction work linked in with our Geography topic where we wrote persuasive letters to the president of Brazil, convincing him to prevent deforestation of rainforests, such as the Amazon.

Our science work started with a very exciting visit from the Space Dome where the children enjoyed learning all about the Solar System and were fascinated by the different constellations and their stories. Across the term, we’ve completed lots of practical lessons that have developed our scientific understanding on how the Sun, Moon and Earth orbit, why we have day and night and the different phases of the moon.

In DT, we have looked at mechanical systems where the children have investigated, designed and created their own moving toys with a cam mechanism. We investigated how different shapes of cam affect the type of movement that can be created. The children designed their own moving toy, linking it to either our space topic or rainforest enquiry.

In our other lessons, we have learned new skills on the computer using the programme PowerPoint to create our own vector drawings. In PSHE, we have focused on our dreams and goals, exploring how different people contribute to society as well as comparing the similarities and differences between our aspirations and young people from different cultures. We’ve had chance to show off some creativity this term within our PE sessions where we have choreographed our own dances in small groups. Another busy, yet productive term for all!

PE days

The children have one set PE lesson and another physical activity session each week. The children only need to wear PE kit for their set PE lesson. In Year 5, the children will take part in a swimming lesson each week for a number of weeks in this first Autumn term, which replaces their set PE lesson for those weeks. The first class swimming this term is Swindon class; therefore, children in Swindon class do not need to come into school on any day wearing their PE kit. They will need a swimming kit with them in school on a Friday.
